Healthcare providers and payers are ramping up investments in IT infrastructure in response to the cyberattack on Change Healthcare earlier this year, and many are open to exploring AI and natural language processing solutions, according to a new report.
A recent study by healthcare technology research firm KLAS Research, in collaboration with Bain & Company, surveyed 150 providers and payers. It revealed that three-quarters of respondents have increased their IT investments over the past year.
The report indicates that providers are focusing on health IT to streamline operations and alleviate burnout, while payers are directing their investments toward enhancing risk adjustment and quality programs.
KLAS and Bain specifically examined how healthcare IT investments have evolved since the February 2024 cyberattack on Change Healthcare, a UnitedHealth subsidiary. Of the 150 organizations surveyed, 70% were directly impacted by the attack, which caused weeks-long disruptions to healthcare billing and ongoing operational challenges for months.
The incident spurred many healthcare organizations, particularly payers, to reevaluate their cybersecurity strategies and address system vulnerabilities, according to the findings.
